Many thanks to Barbara and John Spooner for allowing us to run a tombola and plant sales at their recent Open Garden.
The garden looked lovely and attracted many visitors from both within and outside the village.
175 people visited the garden and entry donations and sale of Barbara's delicious cakes raised almost £800.
They donated £60 to Page Woods and £745 to the National Garden Scheme charities.
John and Barbara are extremely generous (they have already donated generously to the Page Woods Appeal) and the ingredients for those scrumptious cakes do not come without cost.
In total the Residents Association collected £125 from out stalls and a further £65 in donations.
Thank you so much to everyone, particularly John and Barbara, for their generosity.

THANKS TO THE PEOPLE WHO TURNED OUT ON SATURDAY. SORRY WE HAVE CANCELLED SUNDAY'S LITTER PICK. WE HAVE NOT DONE ANY WORK IN PAGE WOODS AS IT IS SLIPPERY - WE'LL WAIT FOR BETTER WEATHER.
Following the success of last year's litter pick we have organised another one on Saturday 16th April and if there is still litter to be picked or other odd jobs on Sunday 17th April. Starting at 9.30 a.m. on both days. I can't believe we would be out for more than two hours but even if you have just an hour to spare then that would be fine.
You need only come along for an hour or so on either or both days.
Ideally, we intend to clean up Page Woods, Pound Lane (as far as the pavement allows) and the roads running off of Pound Lane.
If manpower allows also London Road around the bus shelters and up to the Gun.
We are starting off and finishing up at the Benbow Club where the urn will be on and coffee and tea will be available.
Basildon Council is supplying gloves, litter picks and orange high visibility jackets.
We have reported the rubbish dumping in London Road at the entrance of Church Road; Church Road lay-by; entrance to gateway in Burnt Mills Road; and on the grass verge in Courtald Road.
We do hope you can come along.

I am very sad to tell you that Mrs. Ainsa Wright who used to live in Highlands Road has passed away.
Mrs. Wright was the lady who used to feed the badgers and foxes in Page Wood. The badgers and foxes grew so used to her that, sometimes they did not wait for her to come to the wood, but made their way to her garden instead.
Although she had not lived in Highlands for some time, this lovely lady kept in touch with us via her son. Just before she died she instructed her son to send us a cheque for £100 towards the Page Woods fund.
The kindness of all those making donations to preserve this little woodland gem will be remembered by generations to come.

Does anyone have a copy of this magazine, please?
There is an article about my sister in it and I was unable to get a copy.
Thanks if you can help.

I received an email today from a resident complaining about the poo left in Westlake Park.
It's just as bad in Page Woods. In December when we took a Veolia Trustee around there was a great big plop right in front of the gate which was very difficult to avoid.
Equally as bad are the people who scoop up into polythene bags and then leave the bags hanging on trees.
Why do people behave in the way they do???

Basildon Local History Group has a lot of photos of the old Bowers Gifford and North Benfleet. Recently they had a display of BG&NB photos at the green centre but the photos have now been replaced with others
I'll send their contact details and ask if they will put a display up again for us.
Best wishes Rose

We are absolutely delighted to let everyone know that we have been given a grant of £20k by Essex County Council's Community Initiative Fund towards our page woods project.
Essex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, Planning and the Environment Cllr Roger Hirst, said: “The Community Initiatives Fund is an excellent example of how Essex County Council is supporting communities to help themselves.
“By increasing the opportunities for local residents, community groups and volunteers individually to shape their local facilities and undertake new ventures, we will see them make Essex an even better place to live and work than it is today.”
We are all very excited about the project and can't wait to get it underway. We have received lots of encouraging comments about our innovative business planning. Many thanks to all who have helped this project gather so near to completion.
To actually purchase the woods we only need a further £3k then we just need funds to provide items to put our business plans into action (see website for business plan etc.). The fact that the woods now has Asset of Community Value status means that we have until May 2015 to complete but we would like to get the whole thing settled by April.
Now that we are confident about our funding we are consulting with solicitors about the all important Trust Deed to ensure that this little piece of woodland remains in community ownership and open to the public in perpetuity.

We are currently planning fundraising events for next year to include another quiz at the Benbow and a meal out somewhere.
Keep reading the newsletter and watch this space!!!!

We are delighted to announce that in November Basildon Council granted Asset of Community Value status to Page Woods. This gives us a further six months to get our community bid together i.e until May 2016........hopefully it will not take that long.
Many thanks to Basildon Council for its help and support

What a dreadful act of cruelty. Who would want to kill these lovely creatures and leave them lying in the road? Where did they come from? - I'm not aware of hares in North Benfleet....rabbits have only just made their way back here within the last few years.

We are delighted to report that we are now receiving advice and support from the Woodland Trust in setting up a Page Woods Charitable Trust.
The task of setting up the right model has been a bit of a nightmare to say the least!!! We have received conflicting advice from different organisations. The last thing we wanted to do was to spend the best part of £1000 on solicitor fees if we could find an expert to help us.
We seem to have spent a lot of time trying to explain our "catch 22" situation to many people, so it was a huge relief when I finally spoke to Paul at the Woodland Trust who understood exactly the problems we had. Apparently a number of other groups have had the same problems and the Woodland Trust now has a full time member of staff working with groups in Nottingham and Yorkshire.
However, we are currently the only group from Essex to make contact......who knows, we might end up being a template for other groups in the area.
