Recently our pond of ten years standing, containing fish which were also with us at previous addresses, was 'invaded' by a 'creature' unknown!!! A fish measuring about 2ft long and weighing, probably, 10 lbs. was taken from the pond, decapitated, and left at the end of the garden, the rest of it's body completely intact. It's gills, fins etc. were found beside the pond, but it's body dragged to the bottom of the garden We were devastated, having cared for the fish for goodness knows how long, watching it grow and mature over the years. He was quite tame, as fish go, and waited at the side of the pond for it's food. Over the next couple of days, despite our attempts to barricade the area, two more beautiful butterfly koi were taken, but never found! We feel very responsible but don't know what else to do. A fixed net would be difficult to put in place due to the size and shape of our pond. I think that it must have been a badger or a fox. A heron would not have the strength to bend, lift and completely bite the head off - we don't think. No damage to the rest of the body. Please. everyone with a pond, take this as a warning, and if anyone has a suggestion as to what we can do before the rest go, we would be very grateful for any helpful information. Thanks

Hi Jan Sorry to hear about your fish. When I was a child (in Doreset) I used to keep rabbits. One morning I found one of the rabbits with the head removed and the blood sucked out. Local people said that it was the trademark of a stoat or a weasel. I've never seen a one here in the village but many years ago whilst walking my dog in Church Road a long red/brown creature ran across the road in front of me. I don't know which one it was but it must have been either a stoat or a weasel. Could they possibly have moved this far up into the village? Someone told me that the rabbits seen on the RSPB site last year have now been seen on the other side of London Road so perhaps not impossible for other creatures to do the same.
