Basildon Council has employed the Landscape Partnership to carry out a Landscape Character Assessment. The character assessment includes a review of the history, environment and wildlife in the Basildon Borough Council area. Carole and Rose attended the Stakeholder Consultation on behalf of Bowers Gifford & North Benfleet Residents Association on Wednesday 6th February. We spoke about the history of the area. We also put forward our claim that Bowers Gifford and North Benfleet forms a Wildlife Corridor between East Anglia and the Essex Marshes. The volume of wildlife seen, or that we have become aware of, has increased since the RSPB recently took over the Bowers Marshes and other sites e.g. Canvey Marshes. The Landscape Partnership has asked us to send photos of wildlife; any outstanding views (as they have only seen BG&NB during the winter months); sites of historical interest e.g. old cottages; the pump off Burnt Mills Road. In fact, anything that you think would prove useful to the study by 31st March 2013. At this point the outcome of the study will be fed back to Basildon Council for input into the new core strategy. Any evidence of rare species would also be of importance. Again, photos would be great but even a note of a sighting which you have made would help our claim. Please send your photos and/or note of any sightings etc. to secretary@bowersgifford.info for onward transmission to the Landscape Partnership. Please also load them up on to this forum (you will have to register first - see easy user guide on home page). If you cannot upload on to the website then we will do it for you. Many thanks for any help you can provide because evidence of the Wildlife Corridor could save our village (and the wildlife) from greedy developers!!!!

Having posted a thread about the grey squirrel with the white chest and underbelly I was almost afraid to post this one in case anyone thought I'd been eating magic mushrooms. Last Sunday I saw a fox in the field behind Westlake with a large creamy coloured patch on it's back and partly cream tail Raced to get my camera but it was too far away to get a photo. However, I mentioned this to Carole who says she has seen a fox with a cream face in Pitsea. It's been suggested that a dog might have interbred with the foxes. What do you call a fox x dog a Fog or a Dox??? If you see any fogs or doxes please put some photos on the forum. If you are unable to do so then please email to secretary@bowersgifford.info

On Sunday I saw blue tits and great tits in the garden. Yesterday, a couple of jays were flying around. Haven't seen a woodpecker for a while but often hear them.

Sorry, Tee. No interest in your recipes. I am a veggie (much to the shame of my family who were farmers and butchers)

A lady in Eversley Road told me that she caught a muntjac deer on her security camera last year. She is looking for the photo and if she finds it she will send it to us to put on the website. Doreen said that she knew they were on the Eversley side of Little Chalvedon Hall Farm but so far no one had caught them on camera. They are small deer about 10kg to 18kg. Think they originated from China and brought to Woburn Park - later released into the wild. There are small colonies scattered around the UK. I'm surprised that they are not prey to the many foxes in those fields.

I've emailed a letter to the Enquirer today in response to the letter written by Ms. Benton. I've stated that the ratio of people signing the petition is 1500:6 (actually when I totted up, it was only 1448:9 (forgot to add in 3 partners of those not wishing to sign - but it's not that far out!)
Ms. Benton lives in Hall Road. The volunteers with the petition have not attempted this public right of way because it has a history of vicious dogs - one of our parish councillors got bitten by one of them once and friends of mine have also had to turn around for fear of their own dog being attacked. However, on enquiry the parish clerk tells me that the Bugle gets delivered there - so Ms. Benton should have some knowledge of what is going on in the village.
People living in the plotlands, who have had planning permission turned down, have attended our meetings and expressed their disappointment.
The only worry I have about building in the plotlands is the fact that it gets waterlogged in that area. Floods have occurred around Burnt Mills Road in the past and building on the plotlands might exacerbate this situation. If a more sympathetic approach to building in the plotlands is being considered, as intimated by Tony Ball and Mo Larkin, then the flooding issue needs to be sorted out..........of course, I'm assuming that they are not considering large scale development in the plotlands.

The site looks great and I hope that it will provide a forum to keep residents updated and to share comments and ideas.
Many thanks to:
